Introducing Cochrane Chiropractor Dr. Amanda Tulk

I had always wanted to work in the health field, but wasn't sure which avenue I would pursue.

I was first introduced to chiropractic as a teenager. My best friend was in a very bad car accident. The car was a write-off, and my friend was very badly injured. Basically she would hardly walk on her own, let alone drive a car. So, I dove her to her chiropractor appointments. Her chiropractor was great! He explained everything that was going on with her spine and nerve system, and made sure we understood her treatment plan in advance. It definitely took some time, but she responded well to her adjustments and eventually made a full recovery. You wouldn't know to look at her now, that she was once so incapacitated.

I couldn't believe what I had experienced! I was amazed, and very grateful to this chiropractor.

To have seen this improvement in a person's quality of life each step of the way was enough to convince me that I had found the profession I was looking for. Since then, I have witnessed miracles and changes in people's lives through chiropractic care that continually reinforce my love and passion for what I do.

I attended Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. This is the place where chiropractic first began. It was refreshing to meet so many like-minded people in one place. I still keep in touch with some of the good friends I met there. It was at chiropractic college where I met my husband and partner, Dr. Aaron Todd.

After graduation, we decided to travel to Europe to practice chiropractic, and experience living in a different culture. We moved to The Netherlands, and despite knowing very little Dutch, we opened a chiropractic clinic. It was such a fantastic experience! We learned very quickly that body language speaks volumes! Interestingly enough, explaining the very basic fundamentals of spinal health and a properly functioning nervous system was all that people needed to know. The chiropractic adjustments cleared the nerve interference, and people got well! Our practice grew quickly... but so did our longing to be amongst family and old friends.

When we moved back to Canada, we decided that Cochrane would be the ideal place to live, work, and raise our kids. Though a growing community, Cochrane still has that small town feel to it. I quite enjoy seeing patients around town at the grocery store, or at the kids' school. And my five-minute commute to work sure beats trekking into Calgary every day!

It's no secret that my passion is ensuring that every infant, child and pregnant woman is under chiropractic care. I was adjusted throughout my two pregnancies. I had terrible sciatica and pain between my shoulders. I don't know what I would have done without my chiropractor... (lucky for me, I live with mine!)

Chiropractic adjustments were a safe and drug free way to help alleviate my symptoms, with the added bonus of knowing that my spine and pelvis were aligned which allowed for a quicker and easier birth for my babies. Both my labours were drug-free and under 4 hours from start to finish! Many of my patients who are adjusted through their pregnancies refer in friends who are pregnant, and more often than not they bring in their newborn babies to be checked and adjusted. Not because the babies have back pain, but because the moms understand that a nervous system that is free from interference allows their baby the best chance to grow and thrive! Knowing that I've gotten that message across is a great feeling.

Aaron and I have two healthy young boys. Both were adjusted within days of being born. They keep us busy, Between coaching the timbits soccer teams, cheering in the stands for the early morning hockey practices, or just tossing a baseball in the backyard...raising kids is a full time job! We really value our weekends for quality family time. In the quieter moments, I enjoy practicing Yoga to keep my mind focused and my body strong. Getting adjusted on a weekly basis keeps my spine healthy and balanced. We also make exercise, proper nutrition and getting a good night’s sleep part of our regular routine. These have been the key factors to ensuring our optimal well-being and health.
